This was not a Zoom meeting.  We met out doors at the Durham Park.  It was the demotion meeting.  President Steve, soon to be demoted, opened the meeting asking Roy Ellis to lead the pledge, which he did.  In Larry Bradley’s absence, it was suggested that we should skip the song.  However, Ravi Saip volunteered to lead it.  There was some comment that it should have been skipped.  Jim Patterson then gave the invocation.

All meetings at BCCC are cancelled until further notice.  But there will be meetings on Zoom as follows:

June 30th:  Demotion

July 7th: Larry Bradley will present Kelley Parsons, District Manager of Durham Park and Recreation District.

July 21st.  Steve Plume

August 4th: Roy Ellis

August 18th:  Dave Jessen

September. 1st:  District Governor’s visit.

September. 15th: Daryl Polk

September 29th: Glenn Pulliam

Visiting Rotarians & Guests

Charles and Erin Kyle from the Chico Club were here.  Durham High School teacher, Kayla Hall, was here with her boyfriend Chase Thompson.  There were also a lot of spouses, but I couldn’t’ get all the names so, as to not to leave anyone out, I won’t list them.

Jen Liu also introduced Bruce Miller as a prospective new member.  Bruce is a alumni and was a past president of our club.  He is sponsored by Roy Ellis.

Next Meetingnew

The next meeting will be a Zoom meeting, however, contrary to the calendar, it will be on July 7th , not July 14th.  Larry Bradley will present Kelley Parsons, current district manager of the Durham Recreation and Park District

Member of the Year:

President Steve presented Kristen Cargile with a Red Service Star pin as our Rotarian of the Year.  The pin represents the highest level of commitment and service.  He noted that she took on the management of the Crab Feed this year.  She assisted in writing a lot of the Chrome Book grant application and was always willing to help on our projects.  She was here with her husband, Dennis.  Congratulations and thanks’ Kristen.

Teacher of the Year:

President Steve presented to Kayla Hall our Teacher of the Year Award.  This was her first year teaching in the Ag Department of Durham High School.  In spite of it being her first year, she came highly recommended for the award.

Students of the Month:

President Steve presented Students of the Month awards to Nick Jenkins, Student of the Month for March and Abigail Rhodes, Student of the Month for April.

President Steve then presented to Jim Kirks his Paul Harris Fellowship+5.

None tonight

When we have live meetings again, bring guests, who you think you can interest in becoming a member, to meetings.  Your dinner and your guest’s dinner will be paid for by the Club.  In the meantime please invite Durham business owners and/or managers to one of our meetings.  Actually, you can have guest sit with you during one of our Zoom meetings.

First President Steve presented a recap of his year as president and the accomplishments of the Club during the year.  He commented on the contributions of new members, Jessica Thorpe, Brenda Sohnrey and Kelly Lotti.  He noted that we have successfully conducted club meetings on Zoom since April 7th.  He also noted that we have raised over $53,000 and given away over $40,000.

Then the program moved on to the demotion of President Steve and the transfer of the presidency to Jen Liu.  The demotion was initially conducted by Ravi Saip.

Recalling President Steve making himself a King in order to proclaim our involvement in the Covered Bridge money raising, King Steve was placed on a throne and dressed as a King.

Then Jim Patterson presented a eulogy of Steve’s year as president.

Steve’s wife, Karen, then presented Steve with a “Certificate of Demotion.”

Jen’s original idea was to pass it around and have members sign it on the back, but he had second thoughts for health considerations.

Following this Steve transferred the Bell and Gavel to Jen Liu.

And President Jen closed the meeting.

Past President Steve didn’t have any videos tonight, but he did have one more quote:

“I heard a call from the outside world.  I said no in thunder.  I was a dog on a short leash and now I am free.”

-Jim Harrison-Author of Legions of the Fall.
