The Meeting Opening

The meeting was called to order by President Peggi at the BCCC.

Larry Bradley then led us in singing “God Bless America.

Following that, Jim Patterson presented the invocation

Steve Plume was then asked to recite the 4-Way Test, which he did, as follows:

  • Is it the truth?
  • Is it fair to all concerned?
  • Will it build good will and better friendships?
  • Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Dinner tonight was Hors d'oeuvres.  But we did have a “thank you” cake from President Peggi, thanking us for our work on the Harvest Festival.

Announcements

President Peggi with other members will be attending a Durham Community Foundation meeting to discuss our District grant of $12,500 for an audio-visual system at the Memorial Hall.  There appears to be some question as to what will be installed.  If we install retractable tv screens the tvs will not need screens around them, which would require removal when in use, but they are more expensive.  Also the bids for either exceed our grant we so we will be trying to get additional moneys from the Foundation and elsewhere.

Durham Rotarian of the Month

President Peggi, after reciting all the things she has done for Durham Rotary (including bring desertmost meetings), awarded Rotarian of the Month to Diana Selland.

Introduction of Visitors

President Peggi introduced Imogen Hinds, who she met recently.  Imogen is apparently interesting in joining our club.

Diana Selland introduced her husband, George, who was apparently here for the presentation of the Durham Rotarian of the Month award to his wife.

Recognitions

Steve Plume was recognized for several thing.  First, was for his birthday in the amount of $10.  Then he has a new pool, but contended he shouldn’t be recognized for that, because doesn’t have any water in it yet.  ‘So he was assessed $3 per day, until it gets filled with water.  He estimate that will be 21 days, so that totaled $63.  He also described his flight in an old airplane.

Jen Liu volunteered that his anniversary was coming up, but he won’t be at the next meeting.  It was also his anniversary of joining Durham Rotary.  He contributed $100..

Tonight’s Meeting Program

Tonight’s meeting was supposed to be Harvest Festival debrief, but we hardly got itexcept for a report on the monies received.  President Peggi passed out a summary of the results of the Harvest Festival.  She reported that we collected $1,575 in vendor registration fees,$4,730 in car show registration fees, $750 in T-Shirt sales, $14,503 in food and drink sales.  It is estimated that our net profit will be approximately $25,000, which is a little more than lastyear.

Our Next Meeting

It will be on October 8.  It will not be at the BCCC.   It will be at the Durham Intermediate School Commons.

Membership

Bring guests who you think you can interest in becoming a member.  Your dinner and your guest’s dinner will be paid for by the Club.  Also, bring a guest to one of our occasional social gatherings.

Go to the following Rotary International web site for information on membership development:  https://my.rotary.org/en/learning-reference/learn-topic/membership .  From this website there is access to membership development and other related information.

The Rotary Foundation Donations

You can make a difference in this world by helping people in need. Your gift can do some great things, from supplying filters that clean people’s drinking water to empowering local entrepreneurs to grow through business development training.

The Rotary Foundation will use your gift to fund the life-changing work of Rotary members who provide sustainable solutions to their communities’ most pressing needs. But we need help from people like you who will take action and give the gift ofRotary to make these projects possible.

When every Rotarian gives every year, no challenge is too great for us to make a difference. The minimum gift to The Rotary Foundation is $25.00.   An annual $100.00 gift is a sustaining member.  Once your donations accumulate to $1,000 you become a Paul Harris Fellow.

If you have any questions ask Steve Heithecker.

It is possible to learn more about The Rotary Foundation on the Rotary web site.

Your gift can be made online or by sending Jessica Thorpe a check made out to The Rotary Foundation to Durham Rotary, P.O. Box 383, Durham, California 95958.

Must Be Present to Win Drawing:

Steve Plume drew Roy Ellis’ name.  He was not present to win.

Peggi then closed the meeting.

Rotary commits funds to polio outbreak response in Gaza

By Rotary International

The recent detection of variant poliovirus type-2 isolates in environmental samples and the confirmation of a 10-month-old child whohas contracted polio in Gaza is a stark reminder that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere.

The ongoing crisis in Gaza has contributed to reduced routine immunization rates and an increased risk of vaccine-preventablediseases, including polio. The crisis also poses a significant challenge to fully implementing disease surveillance and vaccination campaigns.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers there to be a high risk for the spread of this polio strain within Gaza andinternationally, particularly given the current situation's impact on public health services.

A humanitarian pause has allowed a two-round polio vaccination campaign that began in Gaza on 1 September. Initial reportsindicate the campaign started successfully, with teams showing strong commitment and high levels of community participation.

Rotary is committing US$500,000 to bolster the initiative, channeling these funds through a dedicated Polio Outbreak ResponseFund. This contribution represents Rotary's sustained support to the WHO in combating polio globally.

Rotary will continue to work with its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and other agencies as vaccination effortsunfold.

Financial contributions to the PolioPlus fund will help Rotary and its Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners achieve aworld in which no child is paralyzed by polio again.
