Our Next Meeting

Our next meeting, on February 18th at the Durham Memorial Hall.  It will be about the Interact Club.

Recognitions

President Peggy recognized John Bohannan for his birthday.  The club sang “Happy Birthday” to him.  He contributed $10.

President Peggi then tried to recognize me for my wedding anniversary, which was on January 31st.  I suggested, that since that was last month, she was too late.  I finally agreed to a recognition of our 66th anniversary in the amount of $34 ($50 less $16).

Tonight’s Meeting Program

Tonight’s meeting was a discussion of the Crab Feed and possible improvements for next year.

Jessica reported that we netted $26,144.  It would have been better, but the cost of the crab had doubled since last year. The raffle tickets for the items on that table in the bar worked very well.  The silent action not so well.  It was suggested that next year we reserve thesilent auction for high dollar items.  The whiskey raffle also went well.

President Peggi present flowers to Jessica and Diana for all their work on the Crab Feed.

Membership

Bring guests who you think you can interest in becoming a member.  Your dinner and your guest’s dinner will be paid for by the Club.  Also, bring a guest to one of our occasional social gatherings.

District 5160 Governor, Dan Geraldi is asking each club member to bring at least one guest toa meeting this year.

Go to the following Rotary International web site for information on membership development:  https://my.rotary.org/en/learning-reference/learn-topic/membership .  From this website there is access to membership development and other related information.

The Rotary Foundation Donations

You can make a difference in this world by helping people in need. Your gift can do some great things, from supplying filters that cleanpeople’s drinking water to empowering local entrepreneurs to grow through business development training.

The Rotary Foundation will use your gift to fund the life-changing work of Rotary members who provide sustainable solutions to theircommunities’ most pressing needs. But we need help from people like you who will take action and give the gift of Rotary to make these projects possible.

When every Rotarian gives every year, no challenge is too great for us to make a difference. The minimumgift to The Rotary Foundation is $25.00.   An annual $100.00 gift is a sustaining member.  Once your donations accumulate to $1,000 you becomea Paul Harris Fellow.

If you have any questions, ask Steve Heithecker.

It is possible to learn more about The Rotary Foundation on the Rotary web site.

Your gift can be made online or by sending Jessica Thorpe a check made out to The Rotary Foundation to Durham Rotary, P.O. Box 383, Durham, California 95958.

Must Be Present to Win Drawing:

President Peggi drew Glenn Pulliam’s name.  However, Glenn was not present.

Wheelchair Project trip in March

There is still plenty of space open for District members to take part in our first Wheelchair Distribution trip to Monterrey, Mexico, from March 5th through March 9th. This trip is open to all District members and their guests.

Past RI Director Brad Howard, of Howard Tours, has scheduled an incredible trip. It will combine a wheelchair distribution, additional service opportunities, and fellowship events with Rotarians from District 5160 and from Monterrey, Mexico. It will also include a luxury hotel accommodation and several sightseeing opportunities.

Please join us as we improve lives on this adventure!

Rotary’s response to the U.S.’s plan to withdraw from the WHO, USAID funding freeze

By Rotary International

Rotary notes the recent announcement that the United States intends to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), a partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). We remain resolute in our mission to eradicate polio. As a founding partner of the GPEI, Rotary has for decades worked closely with all the GPEI partners, the U.S. government, and other governments to end polio worldwide. This effort has reduced the number of children paralyzed by polio by 99.9% since 1988. The global effort to eradicate polio has innovated many times over the years to come close to protecting every last child.

Learn more and donate to End Polio Now

Although this decision creates new challenges, Rotary remains dedicated to ensuring that every child is protected from this preventable disease. We are confident that the GPEI will continue to adapt, to innovate, and to implement effective strategies to keep polio vaccines available for every child in the United States and around the world, especially those in the most challenging and remote regions. The most important decisions leading to a polio-free world are made every day by parents who present their children for vaccination.

We remain committed to working with all GPEI partners to fulfill the promise of apolio-free world. Together, we have ended smallpox, and together, we can ensure that polio becomes the second human disease to be eradicated from the planet.

Rotary, USAID projects

Rotary has collaborated with the United States Agency for International Development(USAID) since 2009 on different types of programs. Our current programmatic efforts and communications with USAID personnel and leadership are on hold due to the stop-work order issued by USAID. Rotary International has already notified members whose projects are directly impacted by this order and is working to continue to support them in their impactful work.

We are navigating the implications of the recent stop-work order issued for Hearts of Europe projects that are part of a partnership with USAID. All projects that are currently in an implementation phase have been notified and given information about what actions need to be taken while the stop-work order is in effect. We are working directly with those projects that are not yet being implemented to determine alternative funding for their important work.
